What is a “Modern” kitchen?

Modernity is an ever-changing concept. It flows with time and exists with the constant ebb and flow of new and old ideas. Think about it. A modern kitchen in the 50s would have been what we would now consider retro. Metallic cabinets, no sharp corners, and lots of odd pastel colors. But when compared to the technology of previous generations, these kitchens were extremely modern. The technology within the kitchen was the main contributor to the attribution of being considered modern. Residential refrigerators only came about in the early 1900s and by 1950 they had become more advanced and capable of automatically producing ice and defrosting. Today, we have even more advanced appliances like stand mixers and high-power blenders that just weren’t common in the average household in the mid-1900s. The second component of a modern kitchen is the overall aesthetic. Today’s modern kitchen cabinets emphasize simplicity, often consisting of muted or flat colors and very flat cabinet faces. Sharper edges and angles are much more common in today’s kitchen cabinets.

Modern Kitchen Cabinets

Choosing the right kitchen cabinets for a modern kitchen is incredibly simple. This is the way you should think when you are selecting them. Choose a color you like; it doesn’t necessarily have to be a drab color. Bright white, dark blue or even natural wood grain kitchen cabinets work great in modern kitchen styles today. The most popular styles of cabinet doors are those with very little detail or curvature. Shaker cabinets, flat-panel cabinets, or slab cabinets are all great choices because of their flat door faces. Remember when choosing your cabinets, that they will take up a large portion of your kitchen and for this reason, they will be a prevailing color. Choose all other aspects of your kitchen to match or complement the color you choose for your cabinets.

Modern Kitchen Sink

Hands down, the perfect choice for a modern kitchen sink is an under-mounted sink. Under mounting a sink allows the countertop to maintain its flat continuous nature and makes things look much simpler. A single or double basin sink with a square or rectangular shape is a great option. Material choice can vary from granite to stainless steel, just bear in mind what kinds of things the sink will be used for, and if the color of the sink will match or compliment your cabinets.

Choosing Paint and Backsplash

Paint and backsplash are a place where you can get creative and add some intrigue to your kitchen if you choose to. Subway tiles, marble, and even solid wood are all very interesting options for a backsplash that can bring a touch of personality to the space. Paint selection commonly ranges from bright whites to cool grays but this shouldn’t mean that you should limit yourself in your selection. A warm beige or cool blue could also be great choices if they match your cabinets.

Modern Décor

The minimalistic nature of a modern kitchen means that the amount of décor is usually pretty limited. Décor in modern kitchens is usually very artistic or natural. An arrangement of succulents, a house plant, or a geometric vase are all good options that would suit the spaces well. A modern kitchen is meant to feel very clean, so décor should act as a focal point, not senseless clutter. It adds a touch of color to a portion of the kitchen that lacks function like an empty island or a bare corner of the countertop.
